When the time came to part, Maxentius formulated some banal expression of gratitude and took out his wallet, meaning to reward the strange, silent companion who perhaps had just saved him.

But she stopped him with a gesture:

“No, monsieur, not that.”

Then he saw that she was crying. For the whole half-hour they had walked together, he had not dared looked at her.

“What’s wrong?” he asked, quite moved. “What can I do for you?”

“If you let me kiss you,” she replied, “it would be the greatest joy of my disgusting life; after that, I think I would have the courage to die.”

Seeing that he gave his assent, she pounced. Growling with love, she kissed him as if she were devouring him.

A groan from the smothered man caused her to draw away.

“Farewell, Maxentius, little Maxentius, my poor brother. Farewell forever—and forgive me!” she cried. “Now I can die.”

Before her brother had the time to make the slightest movement, her head was crushed beneath the wheels of a dump truck that rushed past like a storm.

Maxentius no longer has a mistress. At the moment, he is finishing his novitiate as a lay brother at the Grande Chartreuse.
